Multi-Domain SSL Certificates: All You Need to Know
For those of you who have multiple domains and would like to protect them, there is a simple solution. Protect the carrier domain and two additional domains using one Multi-Domain SSL certificate. Combined with additional SAN certificates, which we’ll talk more about later in this post, you can protect up to 100 domains!
Benefits of a Multi-Domain SSL certificate
For example, if you use the domains www.podjetje.com, nase-podjetje.si and podjetje.net for your business, simply protect them with one certificate. In addition to protecting multiple domains with a single certificate, using a Multi-Domain SSL certificate brings additional benefits.
Maximum protection
As with other SSL certificates, the Multi-Domain SSL certificate is divided into domain, business and extended. All provide highly efficient 256-bit encryption, static or dynamic page sealing and, in the case of the Extended Multi-Domain SSL Certificate, an issuer guarantee of up to $1,750,000.
Savings
Since you only use one SSL certificate for a large number of domains, this also means financial savings compared to buying individual SSL certificates for each domain.
In addition to the financial savings, you will also save time by managing and editing only one certificate, and renewing it will be easier. Can you imagine the confusion that can arise if you own multiple SSL certificates that you have leased at different times? It can quickly happen that you don’t renew one in time and lose the proper protection for your site.
Additional benefits
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, the Multi-Domain SSL certificate has the following advantages: it is compatible with mobile devices and virtually all web browsers. It also supports IDN characters, which means you can use it with IDN domains that contain characters such as alphabets and other letters that are not part of the English alphabet.
SAN certificates
If you want to use a Multi-Domain SSL certificate to secure other domains you own in addition to the carrier domain and two additional domains, you will need your own SAN certificate for each additional domain. You can secure up to 100 domains in this way. The price of each SAN certificate depends on whether you have a Domain, Business or Extended Multi-Domain SSL certificate.
Difference between Multi-Domain, SAN and Wildcard SSL certificates
We have looked at the features of Multi-Domain and SAN certificates, and the Wildcard certificate has a similar function, except that this type of certificate is designed to protect subdomains. For example, if your carrier domain is www.podjetje.si, then you can use this certificate to protect subdomains such as:
– development.podjetje.si,
– blog.podjetje.si,
– sales.podjetje.si,
– purchasing.podjetje.si.
Any subdomains you add afterwards will be automatically protected by the Wildcard SSL certificate you use.
To help you understand what each SSL certificate offers, we have prepared a comparison table:
Depending on the intended use, there are several different certificates, which are further divided into domain, business and extended. At NEOSERV, we offer all three:
- Domain SECTIGO POSITIVE SSL MULTI-DOMAIN,
- Business SECTIGO MULTI-DOMAIN SSL,
- SECTIGO EV MULTI-DOMAIN SSL Extended.
