USEFUL ABOUT DOMAINS

What is a domain?
domain

A domain is your address on the web. You need an address for every website or email.

Without a domain, you would have to type the IP address of the server, where the website is hosted, e.g. 193.77.184.128 - that's not very friendly, is it?

However, a domain allows you to visit the website with a simple address like www.neoserv.com. Unlike the complex IP number, this is much simpler.

For more detailed information, you can read our blog on the topic What is a domain.

How to choose the best domain name?
choosing a domain name

  • Are you establishing a (new) company?
  • Building a brand?
  • Setting up a new personal or business project?

Choosing the right domain is crucial. The domain name is the first contact of the user or customer with your company.

If the domain is understandable and clearly related to your company or activity, customers will remember it much easier. A simple and memorable domain is the first step to a successful online presence.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

  • What does "registration" of a domain mean?

Domain registration is a process through which an individual or legal entity becomes the owner or holder of a domain for a certain period of time. Registration is done directly on our website, and the process is very simple. First, find the desired domain in our checker, which supports more than 1,000 different domains. Then simply add it to the cart and complete the order.

The domain is registered as soon as the system records your transaction or when we receive a confirmation of payment. Once the domain is registered, we immediately inform you of all the details at the email address you provided during registration.

  • What is the difference between domain registration, domain renewal, and domain transfer?

Domain registration means renting an available domain, i.e., one that does not belong to anyone at the moment and is available on the market for registration to all interested legal or physical persons.

Since it is not possible to register a domain for an unlimited period, it needs to be renewed before it expires. In this way, the domain holder retains ownership, otherwise the domain becomes available for registration to anyone after it expires.

Domain transfer usually means changing the registrar (domain registration provider). Each holder has the right to have their domain registered with the chosen registrar. The term "domain transfer" also denotes the change of the domain holder, i.e., information about who is its current owner.

  • Does it matter where I register my domain? Isn't it all the same if I choose the cheapest provider?

The price of domain registration is one of the main criteria for choosing a registrar, but certainly not the only one. At NEOSERV, in addition to affordable prices, we also offer free use of the advanced, transparent and user-friendly My NEOSERV Client Portal, where you can manage all ordered services.

In the My NEOSERV Client Portal, you can manage DNS records for your domains, ownership WHOIS data, easily extend domains, manage proforma invoices, participate in the partner program, etc. We also offer you free DNS hosting, which means that you can direct your domain to any IP address - this is very useful when you host a website with another provider. Last but not least, we also enable you to forward e-mail to another e-mail box (without a purchased hosting package).

  • Is it possible to hide information about who is the owner of the domain?

Domain holder data is recorded in so-called WHOIS databases. These are public databases, the data of which can be checked by anyone with access to the World Wide Web. Some top-level domains (e.g., .COM, .NET, and .ORG) allow WHOIS protection, which hides the holder's data.

Most generic and thematic domains support WHOIS protection, while national domains (e.g., .SI, .AT, and .DE) usually do not support WHOIS protection.

  • Can I register a domain for less than 1 year?

The minimum domain registration period is 1 year. It is also good to know that once the domain is registered, the registration can no longer be canceled or otherwise terminated. If you do not want to use the domain, simply let it expire the following year, so that the domain becomes available for registration again.

So, you cannot register a domain for less than 1 year, but you can register it for a longer period. Most domains allow registration for up to 10 years (e.g., .COM, .NET, .ORG, and .EU), while some allow for up to 5 years (e.g., .SI).

  • I only need a domain for email. Do I also need a hosting plan in this case?

Even though you only need a domain for email, you will also need a hosting package. The reason for this is related to the space on the server, as the email must be stored somewhere until you read it. Emails usually remain stored on the server even after you read them, so it is less likely that you will accidentally delete important messages. If you delete it in the client on your device, the messages will still remain stored on the server. If desired, you can easily change the setting so that the email is deleted from the server when transferred to the local client.

If you only need a domain because of the use of email, we recommend renting the most cost-effective White hosting package, which will be perfectly sufficient for this purpose.
