Should I Register an Additional Domain Extension
If you already have a website, now is the time to get an additional domain. New domain extensions open up the possibility to find an attractive and distinctive domain that is still free to register.
Is using a new generic domain a good idea?
ICANN (the main non-profit organisation coordinating the global DNS) has conducted a survey of 6,000 regular web users. More than 54% of respondents did not recognise newer generic domains such as .EMAIL .PHOTOGRAPHY. and .TEL. They also do not trust newer domains in the same way as .COM or .NET domains.
The legacy of established generic domains (.COM, .NET and .ORG) is remarkable, with 94% of respondents recognising them. These domains are also trusted by more than 90% of respondents. It is not surprising that ignorance and mistrust of new domains reduces interest in using them.
The survey results also showed that in Europe and North America less than 40% of users are willing to register a new domain format. In Asia, South America and Africa, where users are more open to technical innovations, the figure is around 60%.
Why should I choose an additional domain extension?
According to the survey, you might say that newer generic domains are not performing well, but this is not the case. Even the first domains (.COM, .NET and .ORG) took a few years to become trusted by a wider range of users on the web.
If .COM, .SI and .NET domains are already taken for your business, we still recommend that you choose a domain that could represent your business. For example, if you are a photographer, the .PHOTOGRAPHY domain extension will perfectly represent your business. If you run a travel agency, a .TRAVEL domain will be a great choice.
