Register Multiple Top-Level Domains to Avoid Future Regret
The number of domains registered on the World Wide Web is increasing year on year. Most of these have websites already set up, but there are also many that are registered with the intention of reselling and making a profit. Finding a domain name that is both free and original can be a lengthy process.
Now imagine the following scenario. You finally find a suitable domain name, register it, and a month or so later you track down a competitor who has registered an identical domain name, but with a different domain extension. You probably won’t feel so good, and it will be too late to act. So what can you do to avoid a similar situation?
Simple. Register identical domain names with different TLDs.
Why register multiple TLDs?
You should be aware that it is much easier for people to remember the name of a company, a brand or a person, while few people remember a web address. You’ve probably tried to find a website by typing the domain name in the URL bar, but you weren’t sure about the extension, so you tried .si or .com first.
You may have stumbled across another website where you also found the information you were looking for. This made you stay on the site longer, and you could have forgotten about the one you wanted to visit in the first place.
We wanted to show you that registering several TLDs definitely makes sense, because if you don’t, your competitors can quickly take over your visitors. It probably goes without saying that registering multiple domain extensions is particularly advisable if you are running a company website.
Which domain extensions to register?
As you probably know, there are a lot of domain extensions. Some are considered to be more popular, while others are less frequently seen when searching for information on the Internet. When browsing Slovenian-language websites, the most common domain extensions are .si, .com and .net, while . org is relatively common on foreign websites, alongside .com and .net. In recent years, the .eu domain extension has also seen significant growth, and is well suited for websites targeting visitors from the European Union.
Are you thinking of putting yourself on the World Wide Web? If you are planning to have a website in Slovenian, we recommend you register the .si, .com, .net and .eu TLDs. If it will be in German, register .de, .at, .com, .net and .eu, while for a website in English you should definitely register at least the .com and .net domain extensions, and preferably also .org and .eu.
What about all the domains I have registered?
You may have wondered while reading this article if registering more TLDs means you will also have to build more websites. No, just one will be enough, and you only need to make redirects from the other domains to the active website.
Example: Let’s say you have registered mojastran.si, mojastran.com, mojastran.net and mojastran.eu to avoid problems with competitors. You have decided to put your website on mojastran.si. All you need to do is to redirect the other three domains to mojastran.si. Once you have done this, all visitors who type mojastran.com, mojastran.net or mojastran.eu in the URL bar will be redirected to mojastran.si.
Make registering multiple TLDs one of the first steps on the road to online success. Get more visibility and traffic, and stop your competitors from jumping in your cabbage patch.
