The team behind the Bodimodna.si project decided to transfer their website to NEOSERV due to the slow performance of their online store. Although the difference in performance speed is usually noticeable immediately after transferring to our server, this time everything did not go so smoothly.

Soon after purchasing the Blue hosting package, the owner of the online store reported that the site was still operating slowly and requested a check to find the problem. We knew that the sluggishness was not related to our server, as the store is hosted on an extremely powerful server, on which other clients' websites operate flawlessly. And because customer satisfaction is of utmost importance to us at NEOSERV, we immediately began investigating.

It didn't take long for our technical team to identify the problem: most of the images were being loaded through a cloud storage provider – Amazon S3. The HTTP requests that loaded the images from the mentioned environment required up to 40 times more time than HTTP requests that loaded web resources (images, CSS, JavaScript) from the hosting package purchased from us. In principle, using a CDN speeds up the website, but in this case, it was clear that there was an issue.

For security reasons, we first resolved the issue in a test environment, and then we implemented the measures directly on the website. In this way, we achieved that the online store, which previously took more than 27 seconds to display, now fully appeared in less than 1 second.

1. SPEED BEFORE OPTIMIZATION

Before speed optimization, the Bodimodna.si online store was extremely unresponsive. It took almost half a minute to display the homepage, causing visitors to quickly leave, and its Google search rankings were low. At NEOSERV, we soon realized that most images were being loaded through the Amazon S3 service, that is, through a foreign cloud storage provider. Since the HTTP requests that loaded images from Amazon's servers took up to 40 times as much time as HTTP requests to our server, we knew that the source of the problem was related to Amazon's service.

2. SPEED AFTER RESOLVING THE BASIC ISSUE

For security reasons, we at NEOSERV first established a test environment where we reproduced the problem. We transferred the images of the Bodimodna.si online store from Amazon's environment to our server and ensured they were loaded from there. The difference in operating speed was instantly visible, as the website now loaded in less than 1 second. Since everything went smoothly, we repeated the measures directly on the online store.

3. SPEED AFTER ADDITIONAL OPTIMIZATION

To further accelerate the online store, we proceeded with additional speed optimization. This included setting up efficient caching, for which we used the W3 Total Cache plugin. In addition, we optimized the sizes of all images installed on the hosting package and took care of minifying and combining CSS and JS files. Compared to the initial state, we achieved a 98.33% improvement in the loading time of the online store.

  • Why did loading images from Amazon's server slow down the performance of the online store?

    The reasons why loading images from an external environment (Amazon S3) slowed down the performance of the Bodimodna.si online store can be very different. In principle, using a CDN (Content Delivery Network) speeds up the performance of a website, but the speed depends on the responsiveness of the CDN and the structure of the website.

    Some possible explanations for the issues encountered:

    • There was a temporary connectivity issue between Amazon's data center and EU web users (although the issues lasted several weeks).
    • The problems were related to the WordPress site itself, which experienced errors when using the CDN.
    • There was an incorrect configuration of the CDN usage, as typically the use of Amazon S3 is recommended in combination with the CloudFront service.

    Let us also add that in the case of the Bodimodna.si online store, the use of a CDN was not sensible, as the store is intended exclusively for Slovenian users.

  • Why did the PageSpeed Insights tool report an error and what does the error mean?

    If you looked at the image of the speed test result that we conducted before optimization with Google's PageSpeed Insights web tool, you may have noticed that the tool reported an ERR_TIMED_OUT error. This error means that the tool wanted to perform the test, but due to the longer unresponsiveness of the online store, it stopped performing the test. We tried to perform the test several times, but we always encountered the mentioned error.

  • I also tested the speed of Bodimodna.si. Why do my results differ slightly from yours?

    If your results differ only slightly from ours, that is completely normal. Even if you perform the speed test several times, you will most likely always get slightly different results.

    If, however, the deviation from our results is greater, the possible reasons for this are as follows:

    • New images that are not optimized were installed on the online store.
    • Additional plugins were installed, which resulted in more queries being performed.
    • The caching plugin was removed or its settings were changed.
    • Other changes were made that affect the speed of the online store.

    If you performed the speed test only once, we advise you to perform it several times, as the first measurement of times can give you slightly worse results.
