This time we did not transfer a company presentation page, a blog, or an online store, but a web portal. The owners of the media Koroskenovice.si, who regularly publish articles related to the Koroška region, decided to transfer from the old provider to the NEOSERV server.

What makes today's case study special is that we transferred the web portal to the TURBO package, which has more server resources and capabilities compared to classic shared hosting. Along with basic speed optimization, we achieved a 61.04 percent improvement.

Web media that are visited by a multitude of readers every day, and to which new articles are added daily, require more server capabilities than classic websites or smaller online stores. Therefore, the owner of the media, whose web portal loaded in 4.44 s on the old provider's server, decided to transfer to our TURBO server.

2. SPEED IMMEDIATELY AFTER TRANSFER

Since the media Koroške Novice is a massively visited web portal, we had to ensure a flawless transfer to our server. Although we always do this – without exception, in this case, we additionally verified the correct functioning before changing the DNS servers. The transfer itself went without any complications, and the speed of the web portal's operation was visible immediately. After the migration was completed, the loading time of the homepage was only 2.31 s.

3. SPEED AFTER NEOSERV OPTIMIZATION

The difference in speed performance after transferring the web portal to the TURBO server was obvious, but we knew that we could further improve the result with basic speed optimization. We took care of efficient caching, gzip compression, and compression of all images. Both the time of the first request and the loading time of the page decreased. The latter, after optimization, is less than 2 seconds, and compared to the original state, we recorded a high 61.04 percent improvement.

CLIENT STATEMENT AFTER COMPLETING THE PAGE OPTIMIZATION

As the founder and creator of the website koroskenovice.si, for more than 7 years I have been looking for a hosting provider that would meet the demands of our portal. I have tested at least 20 different hosting providers, as well as my local server, cloud computer, etc., but the website never worked properly.

With a slightly higher number of visitors, the server would stop working and the site would become inaccessible, which had a very negative impact on our readers. We were aware that we had an optimization issue, we tested a huge number of different methods, but without success.

It didn't take long for them to identify the cause of the problem, which was related to the web portal itself. They also fixed the issue and further optimized the site. Today it operates without any problems, even with high traffic.

I immediately decided to transfer all my clients and all the websites I created to them, which they also arranged for free. Today, the speed on all the created websites is significantly better.

Additional explanations on speed optimization

  • Could the final result be even better? How could this be achieved?

    There is always room for improvement, and the same applies to the Koroške Novice web media. Additional acceleration could be achieved with more aggressive (lossy) image optimization. We used lossless compression, which only reduces the size of images (in KB) but does not affect the visible quality of the images. In addition, CSS files could be optimized, as they contain many rules that are not used on the web portal itself. There are also opportunities for improvement in the area of caching.

  • Why do my test results differ slightly from yours when I perform the speed test myself?

    First, we advise you to perform the speed test several times, as the times are usually a bit higher on the first test. If your results differ only slightly from ours, this is completely normal. However, if the differences are greater, there are several possible reasons, for example:

    • New articles with unoptimized images were added to the web portal. Given that fresh news is constantly being published on the portal, this is one of the very likely reasons.
    • The plugin for caching elements of the web portal was disabled. It is also possible that the plugin was not disabled, but its settings were changed.
    • Other changes were made: new plugins were installed, new advertising banners were added, images with inappropriate or excessively large dimensions were published, and so on.

    Do your results differ from ours in a positive direction? This is also possible, as we have already written in the answer to the first question, there is still some room for additional improvements.
