Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

  • What domains are general or generic?

Generic domains are those that indicate a general activity with their endings. We also use the shorter term gTLDs (eng. Generic Top-Level Domains).

Each generic domain therefore represents a type of activity. The meaning is easiest to illustrate with a few specific examples:

    • commercial activity: .COM (eng. commercial),
    • information activity: .INFO (eng. information),
    • business activity: .BIZ (eng. business),
    • non-profit organization activity: .ORG (eng. organization).
  • Do general domains have any special terms of use?

Most general domains do not have special terms of use. Domains such as .COM, .NET, .INFO, .BIZ and .ORG can be registered without restrictions by both individuals and legal entities, regardless of the country they come from.

However, some generic domains do have restrictions. Thus, the .GOV domain can only be registered by US government agencies, and the .EDU domain by educational institutions, also only from the US.

  • In which cases do you advise me to register a generic domain?

General domains are usually used for websites in English, intended for English-speaking population. They should also be chosen when the desired domain name in combination with the national domain is already occupied.

We recommend that you register both .COM and .NET domains for a serious web project, and if it is a project in Slovenian, register the national .SI domain. In this way, you will protect yourself from the inconvenience that competitive companies could cause you by registering the same domain.

  • When is it better to use a national domain instead of a general one?

It makes sense to use a national domain when you want to reach a target audience of a specific geographical area with your website (.SI for Slovenia, .DE for Germany, .HR for Croatia, .EU for European Union countries …).

  • When is it better to use a thematic domain instead of a general one?

It makes sense to choose a thematic domain when you intend to set up a website in English, but the desired general domain is already registered.

Example: You have a web agency that deals with the creation and advertising of websites. You set up your website in Slovenian years ago on the .SI domain, but now you have decided to offer services in other countries as well. So you checked the availability of the same domain in combination with the .COM extension, but it was already occupied. You also checked the possibility of registering .NET, but you were not lucky with that either. Then you reviewed the list of thematic domains and noticed that there is a .AGENCY extension, which perfectly matches your activity. You quickly registered the domain and thus prevented anyone from overtaking you.

Some thematic domains can also be used for websites in Slovenian. These include, for example, the .BLOG domain, which is becoming increasingly popular among bloggers.
