How to Manage FTP Accounts in cPanel
FTP – File Transfer Protocol, as the name suggests, allows us to upload files to a server, or transfer files from a server. Each hosting package has two separate FTP accounts, which are created automatically when the package is created, and additional FTP accounts, which are created automatically when a domain is added to the hosting package as an Addon domain. Otherwise, you can also create additional FTP accounts on your own.
How can I access the settings for FTP accounts
FTP accounts can be accessed via your cPanel control panel -> Files tab -> FTP Accounts icon.
Special FTP Accounts
These are two FTP accounts that are created for each hosting package. These accounts cannot be deleted or new accounts cannot be added:
- The first FTP account, which has the same login credentials (username and password) as the login credentials for accessing the cPanel control panel, gives you access to your entire hosting package (i.e. the main domain and all subdomains),
- a second FTP account, with a username identical to the username used to access your cPanel with the ‘_logs’ suffix added, and a password identical to the password used to access your cPanel, allows you to view the IP addresses that have accessed your web pages linked to this hosting package. The logs are refreshed daily (only one day’s data is available).
Additional FTP Accounts
In the FTP Accounts section below you can check which FTP accounts have already been created on your hosting package.
Additional FTP accounts are created automatically when you add a domain to your hosting package as an Addon domain, but you can also create and specify them yourself. These FTP accounts are limited to a specific hosting folder – the folder can be specified automatically (when you add a domain to your hosting package as an Addon domain), or it can be specified manually. In the Path column you can check which folders can be accessed with a specific FTP account. If the full path is not visible, you can click on the three dots that appear in the folder path (…) and the full path to the folder associated with that FTP account will be shown.
Create a new FTP account (Add FTP Account)
In the Add FTP Account section, you can create additional FTP accounts as you wish, which can be assigned any username, password, folder and folder size. Avoid using alphabets, special characters and spaces.
To create a new FTP account, follow the instructions to fill in the fields. In the Directory field, you can specify which folders the FTP account can access. If a folder has not yet been created, it will be created automatically when you create an FTP account. If you want to delete the FTP account, you can do so by clicking the Delete button. You can then specify whether to delete only the FTP account or also the folder associated with that FTP account.
How to connect via FTP
You can connect to an FTP account via FTP protocol using various FTP clients, e.g. FileZilla, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, WinSCP, etc. We recommend using the FTP client FileZilla.
NOTE: If you are using a newer version of the FileZilla FTP client, please also follow the instructions below:
- Log in via“Site Manager” (click File -> Site Manager), or use the shortcut “CTRL + S“.
- When logging in, tick“Only use plain FTP (insecure)“.
FTP account information: you can check the information you need for the FTP connection in your cPanel -> Files -> FTP Accounts icon. select the FTP account you want to connect to and click on Configure FTP Client on the right to display the login information (server, username and port). The port for the FTP connection is 21. If you have forgotten your password, you can always change it by clicking on Change Password. If you have forgotten your password, you can always change it by clicking on Change Password.
How to connect via SFTP
STPF stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol. To connect to a hosting package via SFTP protocol, first enable it in your hosting package by connecting to your My NEOSERV subscription centre and clicking on the Your domains/hosting tab. In the list below, find the hosting package you want to connect to via SFTP protocol and click on it.
This will open additional settings and information about your package. In the grey window, click on the SSH Access tab. Here you can check if you already have SSH access enabled and for which IP addresses. It is possible to add up to 2 IP addresses. You can add an IP address by clicking on the Add IP Address button. The setting makes sense for static IP addresses, as for dynamic IP addresses you would need to correct the setting every time your IP address changes.
By enabling SSH access, you enable the use of the SFTP protocol (you can only connect to the main FTP account via SFTP). Here you can also check what the access data is for the SFTP connection.
We are also always available by phone or email for any further questions.
