At NEOSERV, backups are made on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, but you can also create backups yourself and store them locally on your device.

Backup files and folders

  1. The simplest way to access the files on your hosting package is via the cPanel control panel -> Files section -> File Manager icon.

cPanel (Jupiter) - File Manager

2. Navigate to the folder for which you want to create backups.

  • If you want to do this for the carrier domain of the hosting package, the files are located in the public_html folder.
  • If it is an added domain or subdomain, first check which folder it is pointing to. You can check this in the cPanel -> Domains section -> Domains icon.

Check which folder your domain is directed to, if it is an Added Domain or a subdomain.

3. Before you select all files, you must enable the display of hidden files by clicking on the Settings button in the top right corner.

4. Tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) and then click Save.

5. Now select all files (e.g. within the public_html folder) by clicking the Select All button.

6. Right-click on any of the selected files and select Compress.

7. A new window will open where you can select the type of compression you want. If you are not sure what to choose, select Zip Archive.

8. Then scroll to the bottom with the right scroll bar and give the file any name you like.

9. Click on the Compress File(s) button. A window will pop up with the results of the compression. You can easily close this window.

10. Now all that is left to do is to transfer the newly created file to your local device. To do this, right-click on the file and select Download. Usually the file is downloaded to the Downloads folder.

Database backups

If your website uses databases to run, you need to back them up as well.

Not sure if your website uses databases? If it’s built in WordPress, Joomla, Magento, PrestaShop, etc., then it’s definitely using at least one database. You can find out more here.

1. In the cPanel dashboard, find the Databases section and click on the phpMyAdmin icon.

2. Clicking on this icon will open a new phpMyAdmin window, where you need to select the appropriate database used by your website on the left-hand side.

3. Then click on the Export button above and under Export method, leave the option already selected: Quick – display only the minimum options.

4. Complete the database export by clicking Go. The database will be transferred to your local device.

Backups are thus made and successfully transferred to your device.
