How to Import Emails from Gmail to Apple Mail

Do you want to transfer emails from your Gmail account (e.g. janez.novak@gmail.com) to an email inbox linked to your domain (e.g. janez@vasadomena.si)? And then want to manage that email inbox via Apple Mail?

Exporting MBOX and preparing an email inbox

1. First, you need to export Gmail messages in MBOX format to your computer.

2. Once you have the .mbox file ready, make sure you have already created an email inbox on your hosting package to import the messages into. If you don’t have one, create one in the cPanel control panel.

Next, add the new email account (if you don’t already have one) you created in the previous step to Apple Mail and select IMAP as the account type.

Once you’ve done all this, you can import the .mbox file into your Apple Mail email client.

Importing emails (MBOX) into Apple Mail

1. Open the Apple Mail email client on your Mac.

2. From the top menu bar, click File and select Import Mailboxes …

3. In the pop-up window, select Files and mbox format and click Continue.

4. Locate the .mbox file you exported from Gmail earlier and click Choose.

5. Apple Mail will start importing your emails. Once the process is complete, you will find the imported messages in the Import -> mbox folder in the side column ( On My Mac section). From this folder, you can move folders and messages to new or existing email inboxes, then delete the Import folder.

This completes the import of emails via the .mbox file. Your Gmail messages are now available to you in Apple Mail – in your email inbox under your own domain. And because you have chosen IMAP as your account type, all your messages are also accessible via the Roundcube web client.
