Microsoft Outlook is an excellent email client. It has a variety of features that you may not get in other email clients. It can easily handle different email accounts. However, sometimes you may encounter a certain problem while using the Microsoft client. Most of the time this occurs while you are sending or receiving an email message.

Below we will describe in more detail how to fix error 0x80042108, which can occur when receiving email messages if the POP3 incoming protocol is used in the email client.

Outlook error 0x80042108

The error reported by the Microsoft Outlook email client reads:

The “EMAIL – Receive” task has an error message (0x80042108): “Outlook cannot establish a connection to the incoming mail server (POP3). If you continue to receive this message, please contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP).”

If you have set your email client to English, you will see the following warning:

Task ‘EMAIL – Receiving’ reported error (0x80042108): ‘Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).”

Microsoft Outlook therefore urges you to contact your server administrator or ISP to resolve this error, but in some cases your ISP may not be able to help you. Therefore, here are some solutions that you can use to help yourself.

Possible causes of Outlook error 0x80042108

Error 0x80042108 in an email client can be caused by several factors, for example:

  • Incorrect Default Internet Gateway.
  • Corrupted download or incomplete installation of Microsoft Outlook software.
  • An error in the Windows OS registry due to a recent change to Microsoft Outlook.
  • A virus or malicious code that has corrupted Windows system files or software files associated with Microsoft Outlook.
  • Another program has maliciously or incorrectly deleted Microsoft Outlook email client files.

Check the default gateway. The problem may be with the wrong default gateway, so it is a good idea to check these settings as well.

  1. Go to the Control Panel and select Network Connections.
  2. Right-click on the Local Area Connections link and select Properties. Then select TCP/IP Internet Protocol. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties.
  3. Make sure you are using the correct default gateway. Check with your ISP.
