How to Redirect a Domain Using the HOSTS File
By redirecting a domain via a hosts file, we “simulate” a domain on an IP where it is not actually being redirected, so that a website under such a domain is only visible on the computer where you have set up the redirection.
That is, we “instruct” the operating system or browser to look not at the default server to which the domain is directed (DNS records), but at the server (IP) that we have entered in the hosts file.
How do I redirect a domain?
The hosts file is located in the location below on Windows operating systems, and is opened using Notepad. Open Notepad as an administrator or administrator (right-click on the shortcut -> Run as administrator).
The location of the HOSTS file on the disk is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
If you have problems editing the HOSTS file in Notepad, install Notepad++ to make editing even easier.
ADDING a record
Once you have opened the file, finally add the desired records (with and without www) and save your changes.
Enter the record in the format:
91.223.182.33 vasadomena.si
91.223.182.33 www.vasadomena.si
For the IP, enter the IP of the server hosting your domain (How do I check the IP of the server), and instead of “vasadomena.si” enter the name of your actual domain.
Once you have added the record to the HOSTS file, you can then easily open the domain in your browser.
REMOVING the record
When you no longer need the redirect, remove or commit it and save the changes again.
For an example of a redirection record in a hosts file, see the figure below.
* Apple Mac users will find instructions at this link (in English).
Alternative: SkipDNS
You can also test domain redirection using the app on the SkipDNS website.
Simply fill in the hosted on (IP of the server hosting your domain) and under (your domain name or URL) fields and click the Go button.
SkipDNS will create a temporary link through which you can view your website. Click on the Open button.
In the next step, confirm that you want to access the preview of your website by clicking Yes. Proceed with the proxy. Wait a moment, and then your website should appear.
This method is only suitable for previewing your website, but not for editing it. In addition, the free“trial” version of the application has some limitations (e.g. creating only three temporary links). Additional functionalities and more permanent use are available with SkipDNS paid packages.
We are also always available by phone or email for any further questions.
