In today’s guide, we’ll show you exactly how you can install a website on your hosting package in the easiest and fastest way:

  • UPLOADING WEBSITE FILES

We will use both the cPanel control panel and an FTP program to upload the website files. We recommend using FileZilla, which is one of the most popular programs. We have also used this FTP client for illustration purposes.

  • LOADING THE WEBSITE DATABASE

Some websites also use databases for their operation (for example MySQL databases), which, in addition to the files, also need to be installed on the hosting package. You can read more about databases and how to create and import them into your hosting package here.

Process for uploading website files

1. Pack the files (.ZIP)

Before you start downloading, compress – archive – the entire content of your website into a .ZIP file. This will make it easier and faster to transfer the files to the server.

Find and select your website files, right-click on them and select Add to archive …..
Compressing files (part 1)

Under Archive type, select .ZIP and click OK and wait for the file compression process to complete.

2. Check which folder on your hosting package your website domain points to

  1. Log in to the cPanel control panel (instructions).
  2. Check which folder the domain you want to upload your website files to points to. If you are uploading website files:
      • Hosting package carrier domains: upload the files to the public_html folder.
      • Addon domains: you can check which folder in the hosting package the selected domain points to by going to cPanel -> Domains -> select the Addon Domains icon.
      • Subdomains: you can check which folder in the hosting package the selected domain points to by going to cPanel -> Domains -> select the Subdomains icon.

If the path to your website files does not include the “public_html” folder, this means that the domain points to a folder outside the “public_html” folder.

3. Upload the website files to the hosting package

Uploading to the server via File Manager is suitable for smaller files, but for larger files we recommend uploading via an FTP client.

If there is an interruption while the file is being uploaded to the server, the file must be fully re-uploaded in the case of uploading via File Manager, but in the case of FTP uploading, the program simply waits until the connection to the server is re-established and then continues uploading the file.

There are therefore 2 ways to upload website files to a hosting package:

a) via File Manager (for smaller files),

b) via an FTP client.

a) Uploading a web page via File Manager (cPanel)

1. In cPanel, find the Files section -> File Manager icon.

File Manager

2. On the left side, select the folder where you want to upload your website files. Delete the default “index.php” file and the “cgi-bin” folder located in the “public_html” folder. You can do this by highlighting both items and clicking on the Delete button.

3. Click the Upload button.

4. Click the Select File button and select the file to upload to the server.

IMPORTANT: Do not close the window until the file transfer is complete, otherwise the transfer will not be successful.

*The blue box indicates the maximum file size that can be uploaded via File Manager. If the file exceeds this size, it must be uploaded via FTP.

b) Uploading a web page via FTP client

You can connect to an FTP account via FTP protocol through various FTP clients, for example FileZilla, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, WinSCP or Cyberduck. We recommend using the FTP client FileZilla.

You can connect to the FTP client with the main FTP account or with additional accounts (with the main FTP account you can access all files on the hosting package). You can create additional FTP accounts in your cPanel control panel and restrict them to access only a single folder on the hosting package.

You can read more about this in the article Managing FTP accounts.

To access the main FTP account, use the cPanel access details written on the first page of your My NEOSERV Subscription Centre.

When connecting via FTP, enter the following details:

  • FTP address: the name of the domain or server hosting your hosting package (Where can I check this?),
  • username: cPanel username,
  • password: password for cPanel),
  • port: 21.
How to connect via FileZilla FTP client

One of the most popular FTP access programs is FileZilla. You can download it here (select FileZilla Client) and then install it on your computer.

In FileZilla, go to File -> Site Manager in the menu and enter the required information.

Select FTP – File Transfer Protocol, under Encryption select Only use plain FTP and click OK.
Uploading files with FileZilla

If you have a problem with disconnection during the transfer, change another setting in Site Manager -> Transfer Settings tab -> change Transfer mode to Active.

Check the Limit number of simultaneous connections option and limit the Maximum number of connections to 4.

Once the connection to the server is established, just upload the file to the folder where your domain points. In the Local site box, select the files you want to upload to the server, and in the Remote site box, select the folder on the hosting package where you want to upload the files (in the Remote site box, click the + sign in front of the folder to display the folder contents).

Then highlight the file you want to upload to the server and click Upload.

If you are uploading website files to the “public_html” folder, the “index.html” file and the “cgi-bin” folder are already in this folder by default, so delete them.

Once the files are uploaded, unzip them according to the instructions below.

4. How to unpack files once they are uploaded to the hosting package

Once the file is uploaded, in the cPanel -> Files section -> File Manager icon, locate the folder where you uploaded the website files and click on the Reload button to see a refreshed status.
File Manager - Reload

Then unzip the file by right-clicking on it and selecting Extract.

File Manager - Extract

Once the website has been uploaded to your hosting package, it needs to be adjusted to work on the new configuration. How this can be arranged depends on your website. For standard CMS systems (WordPress, Joomla, Magent, etc.) you can follow the instructions that are usually already available online. However, if it’s a custom website/application, the best advice on this is from your website builder/programmer.
