If you are new to adding an email account to your email client, it is a good idea to know some basic information before you do so.

  1. What is an email client?
  2. What is POP3, IMAP, SMTP?
  3. What is the meaning of “without” and “with” SSL?
  4. Email settings
  5. Viewing email via Gmail
  6. Creating and managing email inboxes, accessing the webmail web interface

What is an email client?

An email client is an application or program through which you can manage your email accounts (send and receive messages, create templates, signature, contact list, calendar, etc.). You can add any email address that you have previously created on your hosting package or on another email service such as Gmail to the email client.

Today, there are many email clients available for computers, tablets and smartphones. The most popular are Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thuderbird, Mail (Apple) and various mobile clients.

What is POP3, IMAP, SMTP?

They are different TCP/IP protocols for email delivery.

POP3 protocol (incoming/outgoing server)

Post Office Protocol
In POP3 protocol, all email is transferred to the devices/email clients where you have added your email account, and the message is deleted on the server, thus also freeing up space on the packet.

Normally, in each email client, when you select this protocol, it is also possible to set the option to keep the original message on the server or to automatically delete it after a certain period of time. This will ensure that all messages are delivered to all devices where you have added an account.

POP3 is recommended for users who use email a lot and access it through one device or have additional forwarders set up to forward it to other email addresses.

IMAP protocol (incoming / incoming server)

Internet Message Access Protocol
With IMAP, the email on the server and on the other devices on which you have added an email account are synchronised, which means that the status is the same/identical everywhere. You can see all received messages, sent messages, other messages and other events.

IMAP is recommended in cases where one or more users use 1 (shared) email account and from multiple devices. It should be noted that in case of a large amount of emails, the available space on the hosting package decreases faster.

SMTP protocol (outgoing/outbound server)

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
The SMTP protocol ensures that a message sent via an email client successfully reaches your server and the recipient’s server.

More information on the difference between POP or IMAP protocols can be found at:
What is the difference between IMAP and POP3?

What is meant by a connection “without” and “with” SSL?

Secure Sockets Layer is the connection that keeps information flowing securely between you and the server. When data is streamed, it is encrypted, making it harder to misuse.

Every email client usually offers the option to set up with or without a secure SSL connection, but we also take care of security at the server level, where the data is already protected by such a connection. It should be noted that even without SSL, the connection is secure and reliable, so such abuse is rare.

GENERAL SETTINGS FOR EMAIL

Important!

Different protocols also require different settings, the important ones are“server name” and“port/port“.

SERVER
The server name is usually written in the form mail.vasadomena.si, for example mail.neoserv.si. Since some email clients do not accept this setting when the SSL connection is active, in this case the server name should be the name of the server hosting your domain. You will find the information on which server your hosting package is hosted in the package description in the My NEOSERV subscription centre (Which server is my hosting package hosted on?).

If you use an email viewer such as Outlook or Thunderbird, you can choose the appropriate instructions. If you cannot find the instructions for your client at the link provided, please check your email settings below.
Unfortunately, as there are many different email clients available, it is not possible to provide instructions for all clients. If your email client is not listed, you can also help yourself by using the general email settings described below (NOTE: enter your actual domain instead of vasadomena.si ).

IMPORTANT: if you use a program such as Outlook and POP protocol to view your emails, and you have just downloaded the emails to us, do not delete or remove the email inboxes, because if the messages are only stored on your computer, you may lose the messages this way.
